The world’s largest sports mall, a three-storey facility with a total area equivalent to 12 football fields, will open near Dubai’s Deira City Centre in Q1 2020. Developer Viva City said its Sport Society project will “be an important destination” for the annual Dubai Fitness Challenge envisioned by announced HH Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman of the Executive Council.

Dubai Fitness Challenge encourages residents and visitors of the city to conduct 30 minutes of exercise for 30 days, with a view to making Dubai the world’s most active city. Dedicated parking spots will be developed within the mall, according to head of design at Viva City, Edgar Bove. A project profile shared by Viva City states that the company “wanted to create much more than a mall”, of which “Dubai has enough”.

The profile continued: “Raw materials normally hidden in a traditional mall concept – concrete, steel, [and] exposed wood – play a vital role in transporting visitors to a place that they recognise: a natural, urban playground.

“Nothing is concealed. From the mechanics of the elevators whose inner workings are completely exposed, to polished concrete floors and visible mechanical structures and services, visitors see behind the scenes [and the] façade.”

Viva City said “one of the largest bowling centres in the UAE” will be developed within the “carefully curated” Sport Society, which will also feature a gym, cricket simulators, climbing walls, a full-size National Hockey League (NHL) ice rink, and gymnastics and soft play area.

Sport Society’s second and third levels will include retail outlets by international sports brands, and spaces for various sporting activities, in addition to food and beverage outlets focused on organic and healthy diets. A multi-purpose arena with stadium seating is also planned for the project.

Remarking on the mall, Bove said: “The project will present big surprises both in design and activities, and will deliver a unique experience combining shopping, entertainment, and sports.

“The mall will have a screen that will be one of the largest LED display panels. Visitors can watch international sports performances and tournaments indoor and outdoor.”
