Emirates Central Cooling Systems Corp (Empower) has signed a contract with Ithra Dubai, a subsidiary of Investment Corporation of Dubai, to supply district cooling services worth 45,000 refrigeration tons (RT) for the latter’s high-profile Deira Waterfront, part of the its Deira Enrichment Project.

As part of the memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed between both firms, Empower will build a two-phase project to deliver district cooling to Deira Waterfront. Phase 1 will include the delivery of 20,000 RT of cooling to 18 buildings, spanning 57ha. Meanwhile, Phase 2 will cover 28 buildings across 91ha and provide them 25,000 RT of cooling.

Empower’s contract with Ithra follows a previous MoU signed between both firms to deliver 11,000 RT of cooling to the Dubai development giant’s One Za’abeel project in the city. The district cooling company said in a statement it would fulfill the contract “with investments of AED350m [$95.3m] through internal financial sources”.

Commenting on the contract, Issam Galadari, director and chief executive officer (CEO) of Ithra Dubai, said: “[Deira Waterfront] is a major new waterfront attraction stretching more than 5km between Dubai Creek and Hamriya Port. A mixed-use development, it includes hotels, residential and commercial towers, retail, storage facilities, and parking lots, as well as diverse amenities.

“Our partnership with Empower, the world's largest district cooling service provider, will strengthen our role in sustainable community development.”

Empower CEO, Ahmad Bin Shafar, added: “Deira Enrichment Project is one of the leading [schemes that] translate the leading role of Dubai’s sustainable projects. The project will face the Arabian Gulf coastline of Dubai, and is a combination of canals and artificial archipelago, as well as residential and commercial buildings, hotels, and other facilities that support Dubai as a tourist and commercial destination.

“We are happy to partner with Ithra Dubai to provide environmentally-friendly district cooling systems that use 50% less energy compared to conventional cooling systems.”
