Kuwait International Airport's expansion is taking off after a business- and first-class passenger lounge was opened at its brand new Terminal 4 (T4).

The lounge was built and completed within 70 days in coordination with South Korean T4 operator, Icheon International Airport Corporation, the first foreign firm to operate a Kuwaiti airport.

The lounge was opened on 16 December, 2018, and is part of the $173.2m (KWD52.5m) project that included building a new terminal at the airport.

Chairman of Kuwait's Directorate General of Civil Aviation, Sheikh Salman Al-Humoud Al-Sabah, attended the lounge's ceremony and praised the airport's expansion as a “quantum leap” for national aviation.

The inauguration comes less than a week after news emerged that the 5.5ha T4 had officially opened on 11 December.

However, the terminal was reportedly inaugurated in the summer and the first international flight took off on 8 August, flying to Manama in Bahrain.

T4 is expected to earn up to $60m (KWD18.1m) in revenue every year, supporting the economy by creating 2,000 jobs and helping Kuwait become a regional magnet for finance and tourism.

Airport expansion is seen as a vital part of plans to grow the country's economy, and the construction of T4 dovetails with an expansion of Kuwait International Airport's T2 building.

In May, heavy construction lifting work began on the project, which is expected to cost $4.3bn (KWD1.3bn).
