Contracts worth US $136 million (AED500 million) have been awarded for the construction of the sports academies as part of the Dubai Sports City project in Dubailand.

Transemirates Contracting is the principle contractor for the main academies element of the project, which includes the Manchester United Soccer School and ICC Global Cricket Academy, while Eastern International has been appointed main contractor for the Bradenton Preparatory Academy.

The academies area also includes the Field Hockey Stadium, the WorldHockey Academy, a rugby training facility, a 2,500m2 gymnasium, an Olympic-size swimming pool, as well as two hostels that will accommodate up to 524 people.

"We are demanding extremely high standards in everything we do to ensure that Dubai Sports City will be a centre of excellence in every conceivable way," said Khalid Al Zarooni, president, Dubai Sports City.

"Both firms demonstrated their own commitment to this drive for excellence and I have every confidence that they will deliver."

Both projects are due to be completed by April 2008.
