Dutchman Peter Van Schaik has won the ninth annual Caterpillar Operator Challenge competition, which was held earlier this month in Malaga, Spain.

It is the second time Van Schaik has won the competition.

Per Erik Johansson from Sweden was second followed by Denmark’s Soren Markussen in the third place.

Overall, there were nine machine tests: large and medium wheel-loaders, track-type tractor with AccuGrade, backhoe loader, mini excavator, hydraulic excavator with grapple, wheeled excavator, multi-terrain loader and articulated truck.

This year the competition also featured a customer support test.

The Caterpillar Operator Challenge 2006 hosted 56 participants from 23 countries.

The finalists came from Belgium, Bosnia, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Denmark, France, Germany, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Mongolia, the Netherlands, Norway, Romania, Russia, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey, the UAE and the UK.

They were selected through hundreds of local events in which thousands of professional operators participated.

The Caterpillar Operator Challenge is the world’s only international competition bringing together construction equipment operators from very different backgrounds and specialities into a standardised contest that measures operator skill.

To win the event, a participant must perform well in all tests, which are carried out on a varied range of equipment.

The personal scores from each separate test are added and the person with the highest overall score, wins.
