India's Larsen & Toubro (L&T) has set up a US $13 million (AED48 million) ready-mix concrete plant with a capacity of 240m3 per hour in Jebel Ali in Dubai.
The plant will be operated by ECC, L&T's construction division, and will meet the growing demand for ready-mix concrete in the country.
In India, L&T manufactures and supplies about three million m3 of concrete per year through 60 plants across the country. These plant operations are supported by a fleet of 500 transit mixers, six mobile concrete pumps and 100 static concrete pumps. The company has 28% of the market.
L&T plans to expand the total number of plants in India to 150 by 2010 as well as expand its operations in the GCC, particularly in Abu Dhabi and Ras Al Khaimah, along with Sohar and Muscat in Oman.
"I am confident that L&T will establish itself as a major force in this segment in Dubai and soon spread its wings to other parts of the UAE as well as other countries in the Gulf," said KV Rangaswami, head of construction and member of the board, L&T.
"With its increasing focus on the construction market in the Gulf, the company can leverage the many advantages that L&T concrete offers and supply this product for its own projects as well as to other contractors," he added.
L&T is India's largest construction and engineering contractor with a growing portfolio of global contracts, accounting for nearly 20% of its revenue.
