Only one bid has been received for the US $556 million (£300 million) contract to build the M74 extension in Glasgow.

A consortium made up of Balfour Beatty, Morgan Est, Morrison Construction and Sir Robert McAlpine, is the only group to have expressed an interest in building the 8km-long road.

The contract accounts for the bulk of the $927 million project, which is Scotland’s biggest current roads scheme.

The scheme has faced opposition from environmental campaigners.

The project to extend the M74 to south of the Kingston Bridge by 2010 is aimed at diverting through traffic travelling between the south and west of Glasgow away from the busy M8.
