A joint venture of Balfour Beatty and Carillion is expected to be confirmed as the winner of the main works contract for the US $1.85 billion (£1 billion) East London Line (ELL).

The team is believed to have beaten rival consortium E-Link (Laing O’Rourke, Amec Spie and Vinci) to the job.

The main works contract is worth $1.1 billion, with the majority of work focused on laying new track and signalling works.

Project managed by Parsons Brinckerhoff, the contract covers phase one of the ELL project, extending the existing line to Highbury and Islington in the north and Crystal Palace and West Croydon in the south.

Completion is due in 2010.
