Titan Wood used the recent Dubai WoodShow 2010 to introduce its high-performance Accoya wood to the Middle East market.

Accoya is a non-toxic, modified, high technology wood, made from sustainably-sourced, fast growing species. It is highly durable and dimensionally stable, and has a very low carbon footprint compared with other conventional construction materials such as aluminium, steel, plastics (PVC) and unsustainably sourced tropical timber.

This was confirmed during a recent carbon footprint assessment conducted by environmental consultancy, Camco, which assessed the carbon footprint of Accoya wood based on a cradle to gate scenario – i.e. greenhouse gas emissions released between harvesting the sustainably sourced wood through to the final product leaving the factory gate.

“Both the construction and procurement sectors are becoming increasingly aware of the sustainability agenda and, crucially, so are their clients. Many are choosing sustainable products or materials. Our study demonstrates that Accoya wood is certainly a ‘low carbon’ option compared to many construction materials,” said Luke Purse, the Camco Consultant who led the study.

Additionally, Accoya wood has gained new recognition as a ‘Gold standard’ product, under the highly prestigious and competitive Cradle to CradleSM (C2C) Certification scheme, which is executed by environmental consultancy firm Michael Braungart and Michael McDonough (MBDC), to determine if products, services and buildings comply with the C2C principles towards sustainability.

“We see enormous opportunities for Accoya wood in the Middle East market, one of the fastest growing markets in the world,” said David Morris, vice president of business development and licensing at Titan Wood Limited, which is a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Accsys Technologies group of companies.

“Dubai WoodShow provides us with an excellent opportunity to showcase the benefits of our innovative and sustainable wood product, Accoya wood, as well as establish new strategic relationships with buyers, architects, investors and individuals. As a global leader in wood technology, Titan Wood is determined to offer the most reliable and sustainable wood products to our customers worldwide,” he added.

The Dubai WoodShow 2010 was held at Dubai Airport Expo from April 13 to 15 April.
