Marubeni looks at rail extension

Japan's Marubeni has been tipped to win the extension contract for the Palm monorail.

Japan's Marubeni has been tipped to win the extension contract for the Palm monorail.

The $190 million (AED700 million) contract, which would see the monorail extended by a further 2km to connect with Dubai Metro, is expected to be announced within the next three months.

Construction has been earmarked to begin in September and is expected to take two years to complete.

Marubeni is currently building Nakheel's Palm monorail.

Mitsukazu Nakata, project director, engineering, Nakheel, said it made more sense to use the contractor working on the current system.

"It would depend on the price, but if a new company joined, then another design team and temporary site office would be needed. Marubeni has everything here."
