Dubai Municipality has awarded a contract worth around US $410 million (AED1.5 billion) to a joint venture between local contractor, Al Ahmadiah and Aktor of Greece, for the construction of a 300,000m3-per-day wastewater treatment facility in Jebel Ali.

Hussain Nasser Lootah, acting director general, DM, said the contract constitutes the first phase of the new Jebel Ali Sewage Treatment Plant Project, which has a projected capacity of 1.1 million m3 per day.

"This contract follows a comprehensive two-year review of wastewater treatment technology and process design undertaken by the global environmental consultant, MWH, on behalf of the Drainage and Irrigation Department," said Lootah.
