ACE campaign targets over-zealous recruiters

The Association for Consultancy and Engineering (ACE) has set up a taskforce to probe the behaviour of construction recruiters following months of complaints from members.

The investigation will look into complaints that recruitment firms are harassing staff by trying to line them up for new jobs just weeks after finding them work.

"By the end of last year we had a lot of complaints from our members about the behaviour of recruitment agencies," said Nelson Ogunshakin, chief executive, ACE, in a statement.

"This has been happening across all levels of staff placement, from graduates to advanced positions. Recruiters would place staff then three months later headhunt them for another role. Members have also had phone harassment up to the most senior level."

To demonstrate its seriousness on the issues ACE has suspended its current affiliate with two recruitment companies while the investigation takes place.

The taskforce, which includes representation from human resources and operational professionals, will also investigate the recruitment and retention trends within the consultancy and engineering sector across the country.

"Recruitment and retention challenges and the activities of the recruitment industry have been raised at the highest level in ACE and our board has decided to take action," added Ogunshakin.

"Firms consistently say that skills shortages, compounded by the unethical behaviour of some recruitment consultancies, are at the top of their list of challenges."
