MEFMA to launch FM foundation course next year

Organisers of the Middle East Facility Management Association (MEFMA) are looking to expand as total membership grows to 200 and it launches its first newsletter.

Speaking at the Construction Week Abu Dhabi Conference 2010, MEFMA board member and senior manager of facilities management for the industrial zones at Abu Dhabi Ports Company (ADPC), Ali Suwaidi said, "The new dream for the FM industry is MEFMA. We wanted it to happen five years ago but it is only in the last year that it has really taken shape."

“Our goal is to reach new members and help people who work in the FM industry. The biggest challenge is to match the right skills and qualifications with the right job. MEFMA wants to increase awareness, standardise FM service charges for different type of properties (benchmarking) and expand into the Middle East.

“Within two years we hope to obtain Government support and engage all stakeholders within the real estate/FM industries by being the expert source for all authorities, buildings owners and FM professionals. We want to establish a FM foundation course in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Qatar and Saudi Arabia in conjunction with Dubai Real Estate Institute (DREI) within the next 12 months.”

MEFMA is a not for profit association initiated by Dubai Real Estate Regulatory Authority (RERA). It wants to establish a platform of recognised knowledge and best practice for the facilities management industry.

It was born through a lack of any dedicated Middle East association or body for facilities managers to work from and to implement industry best practice.

The association has five founding members; Imdaad, Waseef, Maximo eSolutions, Al Shirawi and Majid Al Futtaim.

Board members include Suwaidi, Youssef Abillama, CEO, MMG Overseas, Juma Al Muhairy, vice president of engineering and event services, DWTC, Ahmad Hussain, cirector of FM, Du and Abdulhadi Ali Alalyak, vice president of Asset Management and Corporate Administration, Du.

Corporate members include ista, Able general maintenance and cleaning, IAS Lootah, macro, MMG maintenance management group, duserve, KHIDMA, FARNEK Avireal, FSI and Berkeley Services Group.

Sinead Bridgett is the event and membership director of MEFMA. She said the association had an official launch at the FM Expo in May this year and then again in August.

She said the first MEFMA newsletter will be launched at the end of November including news about its networking events and training courses.

Four focus groups have already been set up which are; The Service Charge Calculation, The Owner Association Group, Energy Management in Tall Buildings Group and the Home Inspection Group.

“We want to develop MEFMA to become the main central focus group and connection for the FM industry across the ME,” said Suwaidi.

“Companies wanted someone to represent them in the industry because it has so many different players providing a different level of service providers be it security, sub contractor service providers or MEPs.”
