The UAE's Emirates Standardisation and Metrology Authority (Esma) and American National Standards Institute (Ansi) have discussed ways to streamline the consumption of energy in the fields of oil and gas, and construction.

A 19-member US delegation from the Ansi, including government officials and representatives of international institutions from the standardisation, oil and gas, construction, and energy sectors, met Abdullah Al Maeeni, Esma's director general, to discuss future joint cooperation.

UAE state news agency, Wam, reported that Esma and Ansi discussed the synchronisation of UAE and US standards, signing memorandums of understanding to share information, knowledge, and expertise.

The US is the UAE's third largest trading partner, and non-oil deals between the two countries are valued at $31bn (AED113.9bn).

Investments into the US from UAE companies come from industries such as vehicles, aluminium, food, financial and banking services, shipbuilding, and oil and gas.

Al Maeeni said that such meetings would contribute to the "development of technical services in the economic and trade sectors and facilitate the flow of goods between the UAE and the US".

He added: "The harmonisation of requirements and standards between the two sides to facilitate the mutual recognition of the systems and certificates issued by the two countries was one of the most important points of consultation and the related development of technical cooperation mechanisms in quality fields and conformity assessment programmes and standards."
