How UAE firms celebrated Labour Day 2019 – an Instagram story

From Tadweer and Dubai's RTA to Aldar, Damac, and Transguard, various UAE outfits marked International Workers' Day on 1 May

Labour Day, also known as International Workers' Day or May Day in some countries, was observed around the world on 1 May, and construction, real estate, and government outfits from the UAE also recognised their employees on and in the run-up to the day, as their respecitve Instagram accounts showed. 

In Abu Dhabi, the capital of the UAE, Abu Dhabi Waste Management Center (Tadweer) recognised its workers in a special ceremony held to mark International Workers' Day. 

During the event, Tadweer conducted various activities in collaboration with Abu Dhabi Sports Council, which saw the participation of numerous workers from companies that are contracted by Tadweer.

In an Instagram post, the waste management department said the event was part of its efforts to underscore the need for "a safe and ideal working environment for all workers and reserving their rights".

This event comes as part of the Tadweer’s attention of the importance of providing a safe and ideal working environment for all workers and reserving their rights.

Also in the UAE capital, real estate development giant Aldar Properties thanked its workers for their contributions to its projects in Abu Dhabi, adding that its loss-time injury-free record outlined its commitment to worker welfare in the city. 

"We’re proud to have been recognized by Abu Dhabi Municipality for completing 10 million worked man hours without any [LTIs] at Yas Acres," the developer said.

"This remarkable milestone demonstrates our continuous commitment to enhance positive health and safety cultures across all our developments.

"Adding another success to our list of achievements towards work health and safety culture, Aldar successfully completed 15 million worked man-hours without any [LTI] during our development of Mamsha Al Saadiyat.

"In celebration of Labour Day, we thank all those who contribute to the success of our beloved nation. To many more achievements and greater success," Aldar added in a series of Instagram posts. 

Similarly, the company behind Abu Dhabi's $1.1bn (AED4bn) Reem Mall said that it had observed 'World Day for Safety & Health at Work' with the UAE's Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (Mohre).

According to Reem Mall's team, Mohre officials visited the upcoming mall project's site to distribute certificates and gifts to its workers.

Government and private-sector organisations in Dubai also hailed their workers' contributions on Labour Day. 

Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) said it had rolled out various initiatives to benefit its workers to mark Labour Day.

"We provided an international telephone line through kiosk installed at labor’s camp in Sonapur at Muhaisina enabling [workers] from different nationalities to speak to their families and relatives on this day," Dubai's RTA said on Instagram.

"The step is in line with the UAE initiative declaring 2019 as the Year of Tolerance. Workers were also enjoyed a trip aboard Dubai Ferry, where they were entertained by various activities and were gifted Nol cards."

Nol is an e-ticketing system that can be used to pay RTA fares for bus, marine, and metro rides, as well as for parking passes.

RTA's fellow entity Dubai Municipality also marked Labour Day to honour the efforts and dedication of its workers "throughout the year", while Dubai Land Department held a series of events for its workforce. 

The city's private-sector entities also showcased their commitment to worker welfare in the run-up to Labour Day. Dubai's Transguard Group – an Emirates Group company that provides facilities management and security services, among others – revealed that its G+7 staff homes in Jebel Ali had topped out. 

In an Instagram post dated 29 April, Transguard said: "Yesterday, our managing director, Greg Ward, and other senior leaders at Transguard held a topping-out ceremony at our new G+7 accommodation in Jebel Ali to celebrate the last slab being cast on the construction site.

"As the largest purpose-built staff residential complex in the UAE, the new building spans more than 75,000m2 and will welcome almost 10,000 employees once it's completed at the end of this year."

Dubai Financial Market-listed real estate company Damac Properties also hailed its workers on Labour Day and thanked them for their contributions over the years. 

"Saluting all the people who work tirelessly to build our nation. Thank you," Damac said.
