South Korea’s Ajou University has awarded an honorary doctorate to HE Eng Mohammed Al Hammadi, chief executive officer of Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation (Enec), the developer behind the UAE's Barakah Nuclear Energy Plant.

The doctorate was in recognition of Al Hammadi’s commitment to excellence in engineering and energy, and his role in developing the UAE Peaceful Nuclear Energy Programme to strengthen relations between the UAE and South Korea.

The ceremony took place in the presence of UAE’s Ambassador to South Korea, HE Abdullah Saif Ali Al Nuaimi; Ajou University’s board members and graduate students; South Korean government officials; and other academia at the university campus in Suwon, Gyeonggi Province, located 30km south of Seoul.

Al Hammadi, thanking the leadership of the Abu Dhabi Government for being given the chance to serve the country through the Peaceful Nuclear Energy Programme, said: “This recognition is a testament to the UAE and its focus on developing specialised skills with knowledge and encouraging the exchange of expertise to support the next generation of Emirati leaders.”

Ajou University was established in 1973, and was the first higher education institution to open a dedicated center to energy.
