2019 CW Power 100: Simon Karam of Oman's Sarooj ranked #53
Omani contracting giant's director moves up in CW's annual ranking of the Middle East's most influential industry leaders
Simon Karam-headed Sarooj Construction Company (SCC) is charting success while partnering with companies in the clean energy sector, as the Oman-based contracting giant engages in several public private partnerships (PPP) related to clean energy production.
Despite technological advances posing a challenge in the industry, Karam expects 2019 revenues to hit $156m (OMR60m), up by nearly 5.4% from $148m (OMR56.9m) in 2018.
To keep up with technology integration trends, SCC has purchased a cloud-based health, safety, and environment (HSE) software that is set to be commissioned in the second quarter of 2019.
The contracting firm has a workforce comprising 2,423 unskilled employees.
SCC carried out enabling and road works for Majid Al Futtaim’s Mall of Oman and has recently won a contract to build a 200km-long road that will link the cities of Mitan, Mazyouna, and Harweeb in the sultanate.
SCC also worked on the construction of a natural gas liquids (NGL) extraction unit at Fahud, located about 300km south of the Sohar Industrial Port area.
The project includes a production complex to extract NGL from natural gas and supply it to an ethylene production facility with a capacity of 670 million standard cubic feet per day.
In the past, the group has worked on the Ritz Carlton Hotel in Muscat and the Sur independent water desalination plant in Al Sharqiyah, Oman. The latter serves 600,000 inhabitants, according to ProTenders.
