2019 CW Power 100: #76 for Abdul Halim Muwahid of Dubai's Unec
Chairman of United Engineering Construction (Unec) moves up in CW's annual ranking of industry leaders
Having founded United Engineering Construction (Unec) in 1976, Abdul Halim Muwahid is involved with the contracting company as its chairman, and also heads Unec’s, sister companies, Safe Mix and Unec Carpentry and Joinery.
One of the oldest contractors in the UAE, Unec is currently carrying out the construction of Dubai-based real estate developer Nakheel’s Deira Mall through a $1.1bn (AED4.2bn) contract, which it was awarded in April 2017.
A retail, lifestyle, and entertainment destination set on Deira Islands, the mall will offer more than 418,000m2 of leasable space and a 1km-long retractable glass atrium.
The main contractor’s revenues in 2018 totalled $600m (AED2.2bn), and Muwahid tells Construction Week that he expects this number to reach $800m (AED2.9bn) in 2019.
The company currently employs 509 full-time engineers and 10,187 unskilled workers – marking 20% growth during the period – all of whom are engaged on Unec’s many projects across the UAE, such as Majid Al Futtaim’s Lilac villas, the Khorfakkan Marine Academy, and Lulu Group’s Avenues Mall in Dubai Silicon Oasis.
Muwahid says the UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Jordan will be Unec’s most important geographies in 2019.
Unec is prepared for a busy year ahead, and the firm is also investing $90,000 (AED330,590) in training programmes that cover safety and first aid, quality management, sustainability, and building information modelling.
Technology is also a focus at the company, which is planning to implement systems related to fuel management, disaster recovery, and automation to boost efficiencies and ensure security in its administrative procedures.
Unec will also roll out enterprise resource planning platforms for its Saudi Arabia and Jordan branches.
