Podcast: Esri explains why GIS, AI is ‘essential’ for the industry
EXCLUSIVE: Esri’s Adel Fernandez talks to CW about how the construction industry can benefit from GIS and AI
Esri, the global market leader in geographic information system (GIS), has revealed to Construction Week how geospatial technology and artificial intelligence (AI) is “essential” for businesses that store data.
During the latest episode of Construction Week Viewpoint podcast, Esri’s head of business development for advanced analytics, Adel Fernandez, discussed how it is working with government entities across the GCC and North Africa to “standardise” the way AI is used across the world.
Fernandez told Construction Week that the firm gathers data, which is then turned into actionable intelligence by AI and predictive modelling.
Commenting on the process, Fernandez highlighted two main elements for gathering data.
“Satellite imagery is used to extract patterns and changes in geography and the second element being the features, which involves traffic data and data from construction phases in the industry,” said Fernandez.
“We try to make sense of this data through predictive models and artificial intelligence.”
Furthermore, Fernandez talked about how the firm’s software can mitigate risks within construction sites and can analyse whether buildings are suitable within sites in the early planning phase.
“Lots of the construction agencies use our software, but if we’re talking regionally [the Middle East], then Majid Al Futtaim are one example, Emaar being another one,” Fernandez explained. “GIS exists in every company and government entity, and it’s essential to put all your data in one place and manage it from a geospatial perspective.”
Business leaders are regular podcast special guests. The weekly bulletin has welcomed the likes of Grant Porter, CEO of the Middle East and Africa for Atkins; Anthony Taylor, head of real estate for ENBD-Reit; Lee French, Cundall Middle East’s operations director; and tech entrepreneur Karim Helal, co-founder and chief executive officer of building portal ProTenders.
