A debutant for the Power 100 2020 is Bahrain Bourse-listed Aluminium Bahrain’s (Alba), Ali Al Baqali, who was appointed as the top boss in February 2020.

One of the major achievements for Alba in the last 12 months has been the inauguration of its Line 6 Expansion Project in November 2019.

Following the completion of the project, Alba became the world’s largest aluminium smelter outside China.

According to Al Baqali, the project was completed “before schedule and below its budget”, while operations and construction for Line 6 were carried out together.

As part of its sustainability initiative, Alba has invested approximately $44m (AED161.6m) to build the Spent Potliner (SPL) Treatment Plant in the GCC and Bahrain, which will be operational by Q1 2021.

For the smelter, safety of its employees and that of the contractors’ has been “a constant challenge”, and continues to remain its “top and only priority”. The company recently recorded 20.9 million LTI-free man-hours, marking another milestone for worker welfare.
