Orascom Construction Industries (OCI) of Egypt has won a $363m engineering, procurement and construction contract from the Iraqi Ministry of Electricity.
The project comprises a 1,000MW gas turbine power plant in Baiji, located 180km north of Baghdad, and home to the country’s largest oil refinery. Completion is expected in 21 months.
OCI has established a permanent branch in Baghdad to pursue other major projects in Iraq’s infrastructure development programme.
OCI Construction Group COO Osama Bishai said: “We are excited to work closely with the Iraqi Ministry of Electricity on the first major power plant in the country.
“This project is a testament to our success and track-record in the power generation sector, and will pave the way for further opportunities for the group as the country bridges its power deficit.
“We will continue to capitalise on our success in Egypt and Algeria and bring the group’s technical know-how and expertise to the Iraqi market.”
