Dubai’s Roads & Transport Authority (RTA) has opened a major interchange in Al Barsha linking Hessa Road, Al Khail Road and Al Barsha with Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road.
The project, which cost $256m (AED: 940m) to build, began in the second quarter of 2008 and has been “fully completed as per the approved timeline”, according to RTA chairman Mattar Al Tayer.
It marks the second phase of the widening of the Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road project from three to six lanes in each direction.
The road has been widened along a 10km stretch and a flyover built linking key trunk roads serving new residential areas.
A 2.5km-long ramp has been built over Al Houdh roundabout containing five lanes linking Al Yallas Road inbound from Jebel Ali and Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road.
The contract was carried out by China State Construction Engineering Corp. The consultant overseeing the work was Wilbur Smith Associates in association with Al Turath Engineering Consultants.
The $90.7m (AED: 333m) first phase of the project widening Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road from Arabian Ranches to the border with the Abu Dhabi Emirate began in 2006 and completed in April 2008. A $111m (AED: 409m) also completed in the second half of 2008 providing an interchange at Arabian Ranches consisting of 11 bridges and one tunnel.
