Engineering consultancy Parsons Brinckerhoff has been appointed as a programme management consultant to work on the new Makkah Public Transport Program (MPTP), which will include the new metro line and a major bus network.

The consultancy has been awarded a 60-month, $93.6m deal from the Development Commission of Makkah and Mashaaer to oversee the $16.5bn project, which includes the introduction of a four-line, 114km-long metro line covering 62 stations.

It will also comprise a new bus network covering the city including a 60km rapid bus network within the city and a 65km local bus service for areas which are further outside. There will also be new feder and shuttle bus services linking park and ride networks to transport hubs.

Parsons Brinckerhoff said that the project holds great importance beyond the “extensive technical requirements” given the prominent location of much of the work within Makkah.

George J. Pierson, president and CEO of the Balfour Beatty-owned company, said: “The Makkah Public Transport Program provides a significant opportunity for Parsons Brinckerhoff to build a partnership with Makkah Mass Rail Transit Company to fundamentally change the travelling experience of millions of national and international visitors, as well as for the local population.

“Once completed, this program of work will leave a legacy for generations to come.”
