Qatar’s Ministry of Development and Planning has published tthe results of a survey forecasting future demand rates for key building materials, which suggests that demand for limestone, gabbro and similar material is likely to peak between 2014-2016.

According to The Peninsula, the report states that around 515m tonnes of limestone and 264m tonnes of gabbro will be required during the period. The country will also require around 166m tonnes of spoil to be removed and disposed of as part of its building programme.

Demand levels for gabbro are expected to climb by 145% in 2014, then by a further 85% in 2015. Demand for limestone will increase by 131% in 2014 and 127% in 2015, while demand for washed sand is set to jump by 108% in 2014 and 106% in 2015.

Demand for bitumen used in road projects is likely to increase by 139%, it predicted.

The report also forecast that the projected demand could lead to an increase in prices of primary materials, which could have a knock-on effect on project values.

Meanwhile, Qatar Primary Materials Company (QPMC), a company set up in response to an earlier boom when many key materials became difficult to source, has also signed a contract aimed at boosting the speed of discharge at its gabbro berths in Mesaieed.
