UK-based engineering consultancy Atkins has announced that it has bought US-based nuclear engineering specialist Nuclear safety Associates in a deal worth an initial $15mn.
Atkins said that the amount paid for NSA could rise to $27mn depending on the future performance of the business.
NSA employs 130 people and has a well-established project and client base in the US nuclear market. Based in Charlotte, North Carolina, it offers nuclear safety, design engineering, and professional security services and in the year to 31 December 2013, it reported revenue of around $25mn.
Prof Dr Uwe Krueger, Atkins’ chief executive officer, said: “This acquisition is another step towards our strategy to be one of the world’s leading energy consultancies. NSA will enhance our presence in North America, the world’s largest nuclear market, and its safety and security skills will strengthen our international nuclear offering.”
Atkins employs 17,500 people worldwide, including more than 3,000 in the US, and has a turnover of $2.5bn.
