Developer Linden Homes is planning a “Dubai-style tower” for UK Plymouth’s waterfront, inspired by Dubai’s iconic Burj Al-Arab design.
The $52.5 million (£40m) project, which is part of development named Meridian located at the Millbay Marina Village area of West Hoe, received planning consent in March 2015.
Building the 11-storey skyscraper, comprising 64 luxury apartments with sea views, and two other blocks, will created 213 job, according to Linden Homes.
The development will be supported by a series of curved steel “ribs”, creating a sail-like shape that has resulted in it being “likened to the famous Burj Al-Arab hotel in Dubai”, according UK’s Plymouth Herald.
The developer first anticipated construction to start last year, and to be complete by 2020. “There is not a fixed date yet, we are working to establish a start on-site date,” company spokesman said, Plymouth Herald reported.
The project represents a “significant investment in excess of £40million” in the Millbay area.
“We are incredibly excited to be working on such a memorable development.” Nigel Palmer, managing director at Linden Homes, said.
“Architecturally, the development is going to be very striking and will really fulfil the potential of this prestigious waterfront location – it will definitely have the wow factor.”
The development has been designed by Burke Rickhards Architects and will feature two other contemporary apartment buildings of 34 and 44 apartments each.
