WHO, Dubai's RTA focus on road safety at World Road Congress 2019
RTA chief reveals Dubai Government's investments in roads and transport infra generated $49bn in benefits between 2006-18
The second day of the 26th World Road Congress 2019, which is being held at Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre (Adnec) on 6-10 October, saw government officials, senior executives, thought leaders, academics, and road experts discuss the importance of infrastructure investments and proper planning for projects in the transport sector.
During the first keynote session, director general and board chairman of Dubai's Roads and Transports Authority (RTA), HE Mattar Al Tayer, said Dubai Government’s investments in roads and transport infrastructure had generated $46bn (AED169bn) in economic benefits between 2006 and 2018.
Al Tayer added: “Effective leadership warrants a clear vision and close follow-up, be it through meetings or periodic field visits.
"It also requires timely and well-rehearsed decisions, technical expertise built on different information sources, and playing an effective role in achieving results through the power of persuasion.”
Focusing on road safety during the second keynote address, director of World Health Organisation (WHO), Etienne Krug, added: “The infrastructure that is being built should ensure that children can cycle and walk safely to school, while there should be better accessibility for disabled people to move around the roads.”
