South African Keiron ‘Kez’ Taylor has come a long way since arriving in Dubai in 2001 to set up the construction division of ALEC.
With a host of completed mega-projects, his company is one of the most recognisable in the UAE and its performance this year has seen Taylor jump from last year’s 22 in the Power 100.
He has always advocated relationships as the key to success and believes the industry’s fragmentation is a negative. “All projects will be finished at the end of the day, but it is a matter of how successful they are, and that is the differentiator. We have progressed as an industry, but we have become a lot less efficient than we were.”
He also counsels developers against taking the cheapest quote. “It’s not just about the cheapest price up front. It’s been proven in research that a good designer will save a developer up to 5% [when] coupled with guys in tune with their business; you can end up saving a development substantial amounts of money.
ALEC was crowned Contactor of the Year at the grand final of the Construction Week Awards 2012. Taylor said it was “fantastic” to pick up the award, which he credited to its employees.
Judges had highlighted ALEC’s commitment to industry improvement and the ‘quality, iconic projects’ it has undertaken.
