Last year was good one for Six Construct (Besix) general manager Philippe Dessoy confided following the CW Awards 2012.
He said: “We have some iconic projects in Abu Dhabi: Cleveland Clinic, ADNOC headquarters and then the Yas Mall, all still ongoing, and then we have started the tram in Dubai. Those are the four projects we have here [in the UAE].”
Cleveland Clinic, as noted by Dessoy has been the most ‘iconic’ project, but every one of these programmes is a massive undertaking - and that is in the UAE alone.
In Egypt, Besix now has two major projects: “Last year we were awarded the new museum for Cairo …then we were awarded the Mall of Egypt for Majid Al Futtaim.”
In Egypt the Orascom Group typically calls in Besix for the largest projects, in Qatar the contractor has consistently worked with Midmac for the best part of a decade: last year completing the Qatar National Convention Centre.
Six Construct Qatar is also the main contractor on phase three of Hamad International Airport, where the value of its 50% share of the contract is approximately $375m.
Leading Besix’s plans in Saudi Arabia is a stadium project in Jeddah. Dessoy noted: “Saudi is where the market is - new prospects, bigger developments - and we have some nice projects on the way.”
Phillipe Dessoy has spurred Besix of Belgium into becoming one of the most respected and competitive foreign companies in the region, efficient as both sole contractor and JV partner.
