A scion of the local-owned Saeed & Mohammed Al Naboodah Group, which began operating in construction in the 1960s, Al Naboodah Construction Group has been delivering infrastructure in the UAE since the formation of the United Arab Emirates in 1971.
As CEO, Gary Wells holds ultimate profit and loss responsibility for the 10,000-strong construction group’s activities, which include civil engineering, micro-tunneling, MEP, building, asphalt production, concrete batching and plant.
“Al Naboodah is the largest infrastructure contractor in Dubai and one of the largest in the UAE, and we’re absolutely pivotal to its success,” Wells confidently states.
“If you take who else has done large amounts of infrastructure on airports in the UAE, we’re right up there in the top few in our industry.” In his role, Wells has directed a clear and well-grounded plan for the business that has driven both growth and productivity improvements since his arrival at Al Naboodah.
His executive experience derives from roles as Costain’s regional director, CEO of Sama Contracting and MD for Murray and Roberts, South Africa.
Crediting Al Naboodah’s openness to international management, Wells said: “Whereas many of our competitors are either international companies and they struggle because of their cost base and they struggle with their lack of localisation, or they are local companies and they are very much a local group, we are the only company that is 100% UAE national-owned and that has an expatriate management from the very top.
“That comes across in our performance.”
