David Barwell dons twin hats of regional chief executive – Middle East for AECOM Technology Corporation, as well as regional chief executive of Cansult Maunsell Limited. He has been involved with technical professional services for more than 20 years, most recently serving as the chief operating officer of AECOM in Australia and New Zealand prior to his moving to the Middle East in January 2009.
With a background in rail and transit, Barwell has also been involved with the planning and design of urban mass transit systems in London, Hong Kong, Manila, Sydney and Brisbane, so moving forward, Barwell will no doubt be eyeing the work surrounding Qatar’s transport network.
Barwell also has an interest in alternative project delivery, has been active in alliance contracting, and served on alliance boards to deliver transit projects in Australia.
He has most recently overseen a slew of project wins for the company, including the $85m construction management for Abu Dhabi International Airport’s Midfield Terminal Complex, a $28m contract to design the King Khalid Medical City in Dammam, a $12m design-and-build contract to upgrade Qatar’s North Road, and the costing for Oman’s Convention and Exhibition Centre in Muscat.
