Engineer Tahani Yousuf received an Urban planning Master Degree from the American University of Sharjah 2007, and is currently working as a director of urban planning department in Ministry of Public Works.
Her professional interests focus on communicative approaches to planning and research. Yousuf’s current projects include implementation of urban planning indicators on existing infrastructure projects, and recently completed a report regarding the same topic on Federal Housing in 2011.
In addition, she has served as a project manager for the National Master Plan 2030 to develop Fujairah and the other Northern Emirates, and as a site-engineer on numerous projects in the Eastern Area office of the Ministry. “For a female in the UAE, it was very challenging,” Yousuf says of her role.
“When I was a site engineer, my manager did not think of me in terms of gender, but only as an engineer. However, I always saw the look in the contractor’s eyes: What is she doing here?
“At the beginning this was a challenge to deal with, but now you see that a lot of the engineers are female. It has really changed.”
For her endeavours Yousuf has been honoured with several excellence awards in the technical category, including in the team work of developing services (with her department) and EGI, or excellence in GIS (geographical information systems) implementation.
