The Ssangyong-Trojan JV has achieved a major HSE milestone on Ithra Dubai's Deira Enrichment Project.

The Korean-Emirati joint venture of Ssangyong and Trojan that is implementing lead contracting work for Ithra Dubai’s Deira Enrichment Project has noted 10 million safe loss-time injury-free man-hours at the megaproject’s construction site.

Ithra Dubai is the wholly owned subsidiary of Investment Corporation of Dubai, and is the developer and operator behind major schemes such as One Za’abeel. Deira Enrichment Project comprises waterfront apartments overlooking the nearby creek, and the extension of the popular Deira Souk and Gold Souk. HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE, and Ruler of Dubai, is chairman of Investment Corporation of Dubai.

Both contractors were honoured for their health, safety, and environment (HSE) achievement at an awards ceremony attending by Dubai Municipality’s HSE director, Eng Raed Mohammed Al-Marzouqi. Also in attendance were officials from Turner International and AE7.

Deira Enrichment Project is being implemented in two phases, and will “transform commercial and retail experiences in Dubai’s original trading hub”.

Phase 1 spans 58ha and will see the development of commercial and residential areas, as well as Gold Souk’s extension. Retail spaces will be expanded to benefit businesses, and vertical storage facilities will be introduced as well.

Three Wyndham Hotels & Resorts-operated hotels, in addition to cinemas and an “integrated transport hub” will be developed for Deira Enrichment Project. Phase 1, including Gold Souk’s extension, are due for completion late in 2019.

Commenting on the HSE record, Ithra Dubai’s chief executive officer, Issam Galadari, said: “Safety across all our projects, no matter the scale, is paramount. Health and safety are two areas where we have zero tolerance for compromise or laxity.

“We are very happy to celebrate this milestone with all our partners here present today.”

Ssangyong’s project director, Jin Wook Kim, added: “Today marks an important moment for this project. The combined effort of all those involved ultimately led to the achievement of this significant milestone.

“As we progress in moving forward with [Deira Enrichment Project], we will continue to strive for the highest standards in safety, and to further extend this excellent record.”
