The annual midday work break aimed at safeguarding the health and safety of outdoor workers during summer months started in Oman on 1 June, 2019, and will continue until the end of August, according to the sultanate's Ministry of Manpower.

“Workers must not work in construction sites and open areas of high temperature at noon time,” the ministry tweeted.

The three-month midday break will see outdoor employees suspending work between 12.30pm and 3.30pm.

Under Article 16 of Ministerial Decree No. 286/2008, outdoor workers in Oman are banned from working in high temperatures during the summer months.

Working hours are usually split between two shifts, in accordance with the midday break hours.

Companies violating the rule can be fined between $259.5 (OMR100) and $1,297.7 (OMR500), according to a report by local daily Times of Oman.

In certain cases, one month of imprisonment is also applicable, and repeat violators may see their penalties doubled.

The UAE's midday break began on 15 June, 2018, and lasted until 15 September, with workers prevented from operating under direct sunlight between 12.30pm and 3pm, as mandated by the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (Mohre).

In 2018, Mohre announced that employers would be levied a fine of $1,361 (AED5,000) if the violation of its rules involved one person.

If the case involved a large number of workers, then the company would be fined $13,612 (AED50,000), with high chances of it being degraded and possibly temporarily stopped from operating.
