1. The Sheikh Rashid Tower / The Dubai World Trade Centre (DWTC)
Dubai’s first skyscraper, The Dubai World Trade Centre (DWTC), previously known as The Sheikh Rashid Tower, is a business complex built in 1978-79 by HH Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum along Sheikh Zayed Road at the Trade Centre Roundabout.
At the time it was built (1979), it was the tallest building in Dubai (and UAE) and the first high rise along Sheikh Zayed Road, surrounded by miles of empty desert.
The 39-storey office tower stands 149 metres (489 feet) tall and a majority of the floors are let commercially. It is also featured on the AED100 banknote.
