Road toll gates will be free in Abu Dhabi until 1 January 2020
DoT says senior citizens, retirees, People of Determination, and low-income earners will be exempt when the toll fee starts
Abu Dhabi’s Department of Transport (DoT) and Integrated Transport Centre (ITC) announced that all drivers would be able to use the emirate’s toll gate system free of charge from 15 October 2019 to 1 January 2020, as part of a trial phase that permits drivers to plan the best travel times, and explore transport alternatives.
According to DoT, senior citizens, retirees, people of determination, and low-income earners will be exempt from the tariff based on their eligibility, when the fees are formally started following the trial phase.
When the toll gates are activated, privately owned vehicles will benefit from daily charges capped at AED16 per car, and monthly charges capped at AED200 for the first vehicle, AED150 for the second vehicle, and AED100 for each additional vehicle.
Public transport buses, school buses with more than 26 seats, ambulances, and police vehicles are exempt from toll fees.
Abu Dhabi’s DoT and ICT stated that electric vehicles would also not be charged for a period of two years from the when the system starts in 2020.
