Empower pilots the world's first unmanned district cooling plant

The world’s largest district cooling service provider Emirates Central Cooling Systems Corporation (Empower) has announced the pilot operation of the world’s first unmanned cooling plant at Jumeirah Village Circle (JVC) in Dubai, which will have a total cooling capacity of 50,000 refrigeration tons (RT).

Empower said in a statement that it has maintained the highest international standards, and has taken into account the criteria for sustainable green buildings and modern urban development, while constructing and building the design for the unmanned cooling plant..

Commenting on the announcement, the chief executive officer of Empower, Ahmad Bin Shafar, said: “The significant and continuous expansion of Empower in terms of district cooling services and the construction of new cooling plants is part of the infrastructure development strategy aimed at keeping pace with the real estate and industrial boom in Dubai.”

The plant will be connected to Empower’s centralised intelligent Command Control Center (CCC), the firm confirmed, which is operating on the advanced SCADA system capable of reading more than one million data entries from towers about coolers, transformers, and water supplies.

The unmanned cooling plant will also use artificial intelligence to monitor the water flow to and from the cooling plant, via the thermal energy storage (TES) technology, which helps to reduce the burden on the grid during peak hours.

The treated sewage effluent (TSE) technology will also be used to conserve natural resources.

Bin Shafar added: “Leveraging artificial intelligence in the district cooling sector helps to lower annual operating costs and enhance the efficiency of facilities. The new plant in JVC is the first in a series of unmanned operating plants that we are preparing to develop with the aim of achieving the greatest energy savings, as well as keeping pace with the growing demand for eco-friendly cooling services that are playing a crucial role in combating climate change.”

Empower operates more 1.43 million RT, providing district cooling services to 1,090 buildings and more than 100,000 clients.

The company also provides environmentally responsible district cooling services to large-scale real estate developments in Dubai, such as Dubai Waterfront, Jumeirah Group, Dubai International Financial Centre, and Business Bay, among others.
