EEG's Can Collection saves 5,235kg of aluminium cans from landfills
The collection mitigates 78.5 MTCO2 emissions, saving 127 cubic metres of landfill, and 1,191 million BTU of energy
The Emirates Environmental Group’s (EEG) 24th Can Collection Day 2020, which was sponsored by Emirates Global Aluminium and supported by Dubai Municipality (DM), Sharjah Electricity and Water Authority (SEWA), Dubai Tourism, and the American International School in Abu Dhabi, witnessed community members collecting 5,235kg of aluminium cans in a single day at designated collection points across the UAE.
The annual national event is organised by the first-of-it-kind environmental NGO in the UAE, and was conducted under the motto, “Don’t throw it away. Recycle it for another day.”
The event was held in line with UAE’s quest to achieve the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and to help me the nation’s target of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The collection corresponded to the mitigation of 78.5 MTCO2 emissions, saving 127 cubic metres of landfill, and 1,191 million BTU of energy.
The total collection has also accounted for 38.5% of the targeted collection of aluminium cans for 2020, according to state-run news agency, Wam.
Commenting on the initiative, the chairperson of EEG, Habiba Al Mar’ashi, said: “I am so happy to see the community heeding to the call of environmental conservation by rolling up their sleeves and coming on board this action-oriented activity to collect aluminium cans and ensuring they are recycled.
Al Mar’ashi added: “This nationwide campaign fits very well with the national strategy of promoting the concept of a circular economy and aligns with several of the 17 United Nations SDGs.”
