Dubai-headquartered port operator DP World has installed three mobile harbour cranes (MHC) with a $12m (AED44m) investment at its Port of Berbera project in Somaliland.

Delivered in late February 2019, the cranes will help DP World Berbera offer shoreside crane support, sustainability, and improved vessel operations services.

As part of its local talent develoment programme, training on using the MHCs was delivered to more than 2,700 residents of Somaliland in 2018, and this module is being replicated in Dubai.

Commenting on the development, Suhail Al Banna, chief executive officer and managing director of DP World Middle East and Africa, said: “The three MHCs currently being commissioned are strategically important for the development of the Port of Berbera.

“As construction work for the expansion of the port progresses, we are witnessing a transformation in the capacity of this major infrastructure asset, benefiting people both here and across the Horn of Africa."

Dubai contractor Shafa Al Nahda is working on the Berbera port's expansion, and has previously worked on similar port projects in Senegal and Mozambique.

In October 2018, Mohammed Nasser, general manager of Shafa Al Nahda Contracting, revealed that Somaliland's locals would be instrumental to the expansion project.

Speaking in a video produced by DP World, Nasser said: “There are key positions for which we’ve placed our skilled staff that will be coming in from abroad. But we plan to integrate this [workforce] with local labour.”
