American company Dupont Water Solutions revealed it provided technical assistance to Ajman’s Safi pater plant – constructed in 2010 – with installation and management services of the facility's system that delivers low-conductivity water for production buildings.

The Safi plant's extension was handled using Dupont technology in 2016, and the facility is designed to desalinate estuary water as a means to reduce stress on freshwater resources in the region.

The extended plant features a two-stage system that first uses Dupont's Integra Pac IP-77-XP ultrafiltration platform for the pretreatment of water.

At the next stage, elements of Filmtec BW30XFR-400/34 Reverse Osmosis – a spiral wound, fouling resistant membrane for brackish water – are used.

Dupont's Wave platform collects process data that shows how the pre-treatment stage in the system minimises membrane fouling, which in turn lowers required system-feed pressure and the need for frequent membrane cleanings.

Commenting on the contract, H P Nanda, global vice president and general manager of Dupont's water business, said: “The water table of the UAE has dropped about 1m per year for the past 30 years, a rate that would deplete its natural freshwater resources in about 50 years.

"It is therefore critical for this region to take steps that ensure long-term sustainable water management."

Gurvan Dersel, general manager at Safi Water, said the project was aligned with the UAE’s Vision 2021 to preserve water resources, adding that the company was “honoured to collaborate technically with Dupont to advance our capabilities at the plant and improve quality of life for the people in Ajman”.
