Sustainable living is gaining traction in the UAE.

UAE online classifieds platform Dubizzle announced ahead of World Environment Day on 5 June that in a poll of 1,369 respondents it conducted in May, 70% of its users said they considered themselves to be eco-friendly, adding it expected sustainable consumer habits and measures to reduce carbon footprint gaining traction in the years to come.

Of the remaining 30%, 7% said they didn't consider themselves to be environment-friendly, and 23% were neutral.

Asked if they would take measures in the future for a more sustainable lifestyle, Dubizzle said participants responded enthusiastically.

Of the actions taken to reduce carbon footprint in the past year, the most popular among respondents was the recycling and proper sorting of waste (42%), followed by reusing and repairing items (38%).

Other actions included mindful consumption of services such as Dubai Electricity and Water Authority's (36%), greater awareness while making purchasing decisions (35%), and choosing reusable products (32%).

Dubizzle's head of customer experience, Salma Anabtawi, said: “The core business model of our company naturally encourages sustainable consumer behavior by providing the community a platform to trade second-hand goods.

"Through this act, users are ultimately contributing to reducing waste and lowering ecological impact in the UAE.”
