The UAE's Sharjah Electricity and Water Authority (Sewa) said that more than 37 billion gallons of water were produced in Sharjah during 2018, with homes in the emirate accounting for the highest consumption rate in the year.

Among the largest sector for water consumption in Sharjah during the year was the residential sector (62%), with 17.2 billion gallons taken up by homes in Sharjah in 2018.

The commercial sector followed, consuming 24% of the total production, or 6.7 billion gallons.

The remaining 14% included consumption by government (9%), industrial (5%), and agricultural (0.1%) facilities.

Commenting on the figures, Sewa's chairman, Dr Rashid Al Leem, said the authority was working to produce, desalinate, and distribute water to consumers.

Al Leem said Sewa was also conducting programmes to raise awareness about the importance of water conservation and its optimal use, according to a report by UAE state news agency, Wam.
