Dubai’s Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing (Dubai Tourism) announced it would provide the city’s hotels with a Hotel Emission Analysis Report each — launched in line with the UAE’s 2021 National Agenda to promote sustainable growth— that will deliver an overview of each establishment’s emission performance relative to its competitors' using results from Carbon Calculator, a tool launched and developed to measure the carbon footprint of Dubai’s hospitality sector by the authority’s Dubai Sustainable Tourism (DST) initiative.

Speaking on the launch of the report, Dubai Tourism’s executive director of tourism and development, Yusuf Lootah, said: “In line with the vision of HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, to transform the emirate into one of the world’s leading sustainable tourism destinations, the Hotel Emission Analysis Report [programme] has been developed as a targeted manual to guide hotels on the sustainability performance of hotel properties.

"It will provide a cohesive understanding of where [hotels] stand comparatively amongst their industry peers on an annual basis, identifying where improvements can be made to facilitate further resource management, in turn reducing the industry’s collective carbon footprint,” Lootah added, according to Dubai Media Office

DST has implemented several greenhouse gas reduction programmes, in addition to initiatives to support the hospitality sector in its energy efficiency drive, since 2016.

Its efforts include the interactive web-based '12 Steps Towards Sustainability' guidelines, a manual providing realistic and cost-effective tools to help hospitality establishments implement best practices, and the 'Sustainability Board Game', which supports hotel partners in driving sustainable tourism practices across their properties.
