Confirmed: New rental permits make e-scooters legal in Abu Dhabi
Integrated Transport Centre is rolling out rental permits as part of a six- to 12-month trial programme to test e-scooters' popularity
Integrated Transport Centre (ITC) has rolled out the first phase of e-scooter rental permits for commuters at Corniche and Khalifa Street in Abu Dhabi.
The pilot phase is set to last between six to 12 months and is part of ITC’s plans to “diversify” transport modes available across the city.
E-scooter speeds will be limited to 15-20km/h, and the vehicles may be driven strictly in designated areas, away from the streets.
During the pilot phase, ITC will study the public demand for the service and monitor the success of it in order to update the policies and procedures related to it to expand the implementation of the service
The move allows all e-scooter rental companies to offer their services after obtaining the required permit from ITC.
To use the service, rental companies will offer smart applications that allow users to rent the e-scooter after registration, and each e-scooter will have a QR code.
ITC said it would study public demand for the service during the trial period, and expand it if the option gained popularity.
