Kuwait warns construction firms flouting fire safety standards
Kuwait Fire Service Directorate's DG meets roads officials after fire engulfs Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al-Nahyan Causeway
Kuwait Fire Service Directorate (KFSD) warned construction companies flouting local fire safety standards after a construction site on Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al-Nahyan Causeway – previously known as Fifth Ring Road – caught fire earlier this month.
KFSD’s director-general, Lt Gen Khaled Al-Mekrad, held a meeting with Public Authority for Roads and Transportation (Part), represented by Suha Ashkanani, to discuss how construction site safety standards could be raised in the Arab country, according to a report by Kuna.
In July 2017, Al-Mekrad said KFSD was taking "necessary measures" against individuals whose oversight led to fires, adding at the time that site supervisors were “responsible for most” construction site fires that had occurred in the country at the time.
Speaking in 2017, Al-Mekrad said most construction fires would be attributed to "the way [...] iron was cut inside the site, causing sparks to start [fires] when they land on wood".
