STI Engineering wins $3m contract for ODPP's date processing plant

Italian firm to work as lead consultant for development comprising 10ha processing plant and 12ha collecting centres

A date processing plant is coming to Oman.

Italy-headquartered design and consulting firm STI Engineering has been picked as lead consultant by Oman Dates Production and Packaging Company (ODPP) under a $3.3m (OMR1.3m) contract for a date processing plant and six collecting centres in the sultanate.

According to Oman's state news agency, ONA, the agreement was signed by chairman of ODPP, Salah bin Hilal al-Ma'awali, and chairman of STI Engineering's Omani subsidiary, Sultan bin Salim al-Salmy.

The processing plant will be built on an area spanning 10ha in Rumais, Barka, and will have a total production capacity of 7,2574.8 metric tonnes of dates per annum.

The collecting centres, which will together cover an area of 11.9ha, will be located in the wilayats of Saham, A'Rustaq, Nizwa, Ibri, Ibra, and Ja'alan Bani Bu Hasan.

Phase 1 of the project will cost $72.8m (OMR28m), with costs reaching $195m (OMR75m) in the final stage.
