Ground has been broken on Phase 1 of renovation and upgradation of Yemen’s Aden International Airport, with the project being funded by the Saudi Development and Reconstruction Program for Yemen (SDRPY).

As part of the project, the airport will undergo complete modernisation and expansion that will be carried out in three phases.

Phase 1 of the airport upgradation project will focus at providing electricity, safety measures, and transportation. The external main gates and roads of the airport will also be studied and redesigned, and passenger transport buses will be provided.

Meanwhile, Phase 2 will involve the construction and connection of vital service systems, including telecommunications, navigation, and air traffic control. Additionally, the runway and taxi areas, gates, and tunnels connecting gates to aircraft will also be renovated.

Under Phase 3 airport facilities and operations will be aligned with ICAO standards that will include safety, electricity supply, interior and exterior infrastructure, air traffic control, and navigation.

Construction work for the project has been carried out following a preliminary needs assessment done by SDRPY in November 2019 to inspect airport buildings including runway surface, lighting and equipment, current navigation devices and systems, and departure and arrival halls.

Speaking on the construction start of the project, president of the General Authority for Civil Aviation and Meteorology, Sapt. Saleh Salim bin Nahid said: "Laying down the first building blocks of development and strategic projects for Aden International Airport will contribute significantly to raising the standards of the airport and the quality of services available to the travellers and airlines."

According to Capt. Bin Nahid, SDRPY has supported other airports including the ones in Al-Ghaydah, Seiyun, Socotra and Marib in Yemen.
