MEET builds 90m2 3D-printed house within 2 weeks at SRTI Park

The Middle East Engineering Technologies (MEET) firm, which was formed to explore the latest trends in construction technology, has unveiled its latest proof-of-concept 3D printed house in partnership with the Sharjah Research, Technology, and Innovation Park (SRTI Park).
The 90m2 structure of the 3D-printed house was constructed at the SRTI Park within two weeks.
Commenting on the benefits of 3D-printed technology, the project executive at MEET, Haidar Alhaidary, told Construction Week: “3D concrete printing will be the future of construction. One of the benefits that 3D printing guarantees is up to 50% savings in time.”
Alhaidary added: “We believe that through 3D printing, we can also get savings in cost by reducing the wastage of construction material. You only extrude the material that you need for construction. There’s no need to extrude excess material.”
Although 3D-printing is theoretically environment-friendly, MEET intends to prove this through their proof-of-concept 3D-printed houses.
In addition, the operation of the 3D-printing robot requires only three to four skilled labourers, which reduces manual error, improves the quality of the product, and reduces manhours required to build 3D-printed structures such as houses.
Since the 3D-printed house is modular and built in elements, the size and the number of the houses can be increased based on the requirements.
“3D printing also gives freedom to the architect because he can control the design of the house. They can play with the offsets of additive manufacturing layers to create unique designs of houses, despite the fact that it prints parallel layers over layers. This sort of freedom is not possible in traditional formwork,” Alhaidary concluded.
