Construction of the Comprehensive Disability Complex in Bahrain’s A’ali is more than 90% complete, with doors expected to open later this year.

The complex covers a total area of 20,105m2 and has a built-up area of 17,642m2.

The project is being funded by the Kuwaiti Fund for Arab Economic Development at a cost of $23m (BD8.68m), which covering the cost of construction, tools and equipment, furnishing and decoration, and provision of buses specially equipped for the disabled

Once complete, it will accommodate about 1,500 persons and 160 administrative staff at its main building.

The complex will have 10 separate buildings, which specialise in treating, educating, and rehabilitating People of Determination, including those coping with Down syndrome, the deaf, the dumb, the autistic, and people with brain damage and mental illnesses.

Other departments at the complex will include physical therapy, psychotherapy, work therapy, a specialised library, psychological support centre, evaluation, and a diagnosis centre.

Bahrain’s Labour and Social Development Minister, Jameel bin Mohammed Ali Humaidan, paid an inspection visit to the complex, along with a number of officials, according to the state-run Bahrain News Agency.

Commenting on the project, Ali Humaidan said that it is one of the biggest and most specialised complexes for People of Determination in the Middle East, noting that it will serve a major segment in the Bahraini society.

The location of the complex has a number of access points on the roads network, bus stops, parking spaces especially designed for the people of determination, visitors, the administrative, education and medical staff.
