Sharjah-based public-private partnership firm Bee’ah has been appointed the waste management partner for Dubai Airports’ Dubai International Airport and Dubai World Central.

Bee’ah will work in partnership with Dubai Airports’ facilities care team to dispose waste from excess baggage and confiscated materials, as well as oversee both airside and landside waste management operations, including non-hazardous and hazardous waste, used cooking and engine oil waste, and all recyclables.

Speaking about the appointment, Bee’ah Group's chief executive officer, HE Khaled Al Huraimel, said: “We look forward to supporting Dubai Airports' sustainability mandate of reducing waste to landfills and implementing advanced recycling and material recovery solutions to promote a circular economy.”

Commenting on Bee’ah and Dubai Airports’ collaboration, which is in line with the ban of single-use plastics at both airports, executive vice president of service and operations at Dubai Airports, Jose Oller, said: “Most of the single-use plastics at our airports, including cutlery, drinking straws, and take-away food packaging have been replaced with sustainable alternatives as an immediate result of our initiative.”

Bee’ah has achieved a waste diversion rate of 76% for the emirate of Sharjah – the highest in the Middle East – and this is estimated to reach 100% in 2021, upon completion of the Middle East’s first waste-to-energy plant in Sharjah.
